Harvesting Seabuckthorn / Hippophae rhamnoides

Harvesting Seabuckthorn Berries

This is just one method.  It is a great video produced as an advertisement for a brand of cosmetics.  Even so it has a lot of good information and is informative as to row spacing for mechanized harvesting.
There are also machines in development which would thresh the fresh berries from the plant without cutting.  (Cutting the branches as seen here does reduce the next years harvest.)  So far these fresh berry threshing machines have not been successful to my knowledge.  They tend to smash and bruise the berries, or if set at a lesser amplitude, leave to many berries on the plant.  Some research is being done to treat the plant with plant hormones prior to harvest to facilitate the loosening of the fruit from the branches before the machine threshes or shakess the plants.  This doesn't seem like a good idea to me from a human health perspective but I really do not know the safety of plant hormone treatments.

  1. Does anyone know any feasible mechanical harvester for sea buckthorn? If yes, would you be kind to post a link?
