More Sea Buckthorn in the United States?

Could it be possible, other Sea Buckthorn Growers in the US?

In short, the answer is yes! Teal Farm and Whole System Designs in Vermont both have wonderful businesses.  ( First and Lasts ).  Teal Farm is for sale, the price is 11 million 500 thousand dollars I think it is down from about 15 million dollars.  I also profiled Barbara Barzyck about 3 years ago in New Brunswick Canada. Barbara's email isn't still valid, so Barbara, if you are reading this, please send me a message! ( Great Story About a New Small Producer ).  Also I have recently been in contact with a very nice couple in Idaho who are working 15 acres of Sea Buckthorn and I hope to profile their efforts here soon.

If you have been following for a while, I have been openly wondering if there was any other orchards in the United States.  I can now say there are other people who are pursuing growing Sea Buckthorn.  The benefits of locally produced vitamins and omegas are huge in many respects, not the least of which is eliminating the transportation of these products from the other side of the world.  Locally produced is so much better.  I am not sure I would characterize Teal Farm and Whole System's Sea Buckthorn plantings as a Sea Buckthorn Orchard.  They have more of an intergrated planting system which includes many other plants.

Teal Farm and Whole System Designs launched sales of Sea Buckthorn juice and other products this past week.  I get the sense there is a competition going on between them.  Nothing wrong with that!

As I am writing this there is a big snowstorm raging here in Massachusetts.  In Maine the plants are overwintering in their very isolated location.  This time of year the only access is either by snowsled or snowshoe.  Even that is a difficult proposition.  Six and a half mile of deep snow through the woods isn't a walk in the park.  Two weeks from now myself and a very good friend will be mounting an expedition of sorts into the wilderness to check on my Foxgreen Farm Sea Buckthorn orchard in Seboeis Maine.  I hope to have some great photos and good stories to share.

A couple of current updates from me.

Seed sales have been brisk.  I am not sure the supply will last until the next shipment arrives from China.  In the meantime, I am offering smaller quantities.   I was hoping to receive them this past week.  It didn't happen and since the holiday of Chinese New Year is ongoing right now, nothing is progressing further until their celebrations have ended.  Happy New Year to them!

  

Plant Sales are going well too.  The first shipment to purchasers is scheduled during the first week in March. I have to update the number of plants left but you can subtract about a hundred or so from what the page says right now.  I also have an interested buyer who may take most of what I have left unsold, but that is still up in the air.

Yellowhorn seeds  are now for sale here.  Here on the Sea Buckthorn Blog?  you might ask why?  My farm experiment does include efforts to make it a place which can support the health and nutrition of its resident and surrounding community members - along side the experiment to see if Sea Buckthorn can contribute to the larger economy of northern Maine and promote local nutrients vs. nationally or globally sourced nutrition.
